thetpr asked: How did you get into being a photographer for models??
Well after having photographed non-models for some clothing lines, just being a formally trained photographer, and having photographed attractive women that were in my personal/love life I figured I would make it a more serious endeavor.
I started with girls who weren’t necessarily professional models but who were relatively close the figure or height of professional models. So about 5’7”-5’11” and a dress size of 4 or smaller and in major markets like New York and editorial fashion is about 5’9”-5’11”, but in secondary markets like Miami or LA you’ll see plenty of even like 5’6”-5’7” girls with really beautiful faces/amazing bodies that make a living modeling.
From there it was just matter of building up a portfolio of images until I was ready for actual agency models. At that point I reached out to various I guess “lesser” agencies and from there developed my work with better models. Once I had a pretty solid portfolio of work I began to reach out to better agencies, in New York, places like Ford or Elite that are cream of the crop modeling agencies…
As like an emerging editorial fashion photographer I’ve done agency tests (paid/unpaid) with most of the modeling agencies in New York. Basically every agency outside of IMG, DNA, and Marilyn. And shooting agency tests isn’t this ridiculous exclusive club. There are some photographers that shoot agency tests for some of the same agencies I have, point blank I think are fucking terrible.
It’s a matter of where you build from agency tests. There are quite a few photographers who end up getting stuck in that agency test/internet editorial vein and personally I don’t want that, so at the moment working on getting my polaroid book some kind of distribution in America, even if it’s just like NY, LA, and Chicago and promote that with maybe an in-store or gallery show/etc… And getting some really good editorial work that really takes these basic fashion/beauty looks I’ve developed in agency tests to another level, experimenting with wardrobe & style/hair & makeup/light/etc…

In an era of disposability where millions of images are taken, posted on the internet, and equally soon forgotten the process of image creation is really quite lost. In late August, 2011 with my Polaroid 195 Land Camera and 2 boxes of FP-100B instant film Chase and I created the imagery for the long awaited and DJ Drama hosted, The Heir Up There.
Below (Or above on most Tumblr’s) are the actual polaroids themselves unretouched/processed as they exist today, a set of about dozen 3.25” x 4.25” black and white photographic prints. Each one taken and chemically processed until the print is pealed apart from the film and chemistry about 30 seconds later, the process is slow and tedious shot by shot. The polaroids themselves in conjunction with the crisp/hard light from my Profoto Hardbox create a naturally raw effect many people spend hours creating in photoshop.
The cover image of Chase exhaling smoke and seated was chosen by Chase virtually on the spot, and in post-production removed from the polaroid framing and contrast adjusted so white text could be set on it… Regardless of the shelf life of mixtapes or contemporary music as a whole, these polaroids serve as literal documents of an evolving artist/producer and cementing his place in culture and that in physical form stand the test time well beyond Tumblr and the internet.
Look for Chase N. Cashe on The Club Paradise Tour with Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and ASAP Rocky starting Tuesday in Miami, FL.
